Movie Review Jan 10

Since our in built babysitters have left Dave and I have not been to the movies. So this month we hired some DVDs out. These are the ones I really liked.

Passage to Zarahemla movie is about two orphaned teens, Kerra and Brock who flee to a long lost relatives farm where parallel realities - ancient and modern - mysteriously collide. With the help of a Nephite warrior, Kidonni, the face off with a rogue LA gang and the Nephite's sworn enemy; the evil Gadianton Robbers - all of which lead Kerra ans Brock to an unexpected surprise. This movie was good and I really like how they integrated the past with the present.

Based on the novel by John Boyne, THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS is a wrenching Holocaust story about a young German boy and his forbidden friendship with a Jewish child. Bruno (Asa Butterfield) is living a charmed life in Berlin as the son of a high-ranking Nazi soldier, when his father (David Thewlis) is suddenly transferred to a job out in the country. Bruno, as well as his sister Gretel (Amber Beattie) and mother (Vera Farmiga) must all join him at his new post. Bruno is lonely and confused by his new surroundings, and he doesn't understand why he can't wander the grounds or play at a nearby farm. The "farm," of course, is a concentration camp, though Bruno doesn't know this. He soon sneaks away to explore, and meets Shmuel (Jack Scanlon) a prisoner of the camp. Shmuel is eight, the same age as Bruno, and the two form a timid, careful friendship, playing checkers and catch through the barbed wire fence. Bruno knows that his friendship with Shmuel is dangerous, but after witnessing brutal violence perpetrated against some very kind people, he has begun to question the Nazi doctrine of hate. He is no longer sure what to make of his soldier father, whom he once believed to be a hero. When he learns that Shmuel is in trouble, he vows to help him, and together the boys form an outrageous plan that culminates in the film's devastating climax. The BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS is a deeply moving and--it must be said--disturbing movie. But it is a remarkable story, told with masterly intelligence and grace. I loved this movie.

Emma Smith My Story is a beautiful movie. I loved everything this movie offered from the acting to the scenery and the music. She was an amazing woman who had tremendous faith.
DEFIANCE is a different kind of World War II movie, one that looks at the Holocaust from a unique angle--telling the true story of a group of Jews in Eastern Europe who fought back. On the run from the Germans and the local police, the three Russian Bielski brothers--Tuvia (Daniel Craig), Zus (Liev Schreiber), and Asael (Jamie Bell)--hide out deep in the forest. Their numbers swell as more and more refugees join them, coming together to form a community while also patrolling with guns and shooting the enemy to stay alive. But Tuvia and Zus have a falling-out over what future direction to take: Tuvia thinks it best to remain in the forest despite the coming vicious winter, but Zus wants to join the Russian resistance, which is aggressively attacking the Nazis. Complicating the situation are the women in their lives, known as forest wives--Lilka (Alexa Davalos) shows interest in Tuvia, Bella (Iben Hjelje) grows close to Zus, and young Chaya (Mia Wasikowska) and Asael flirt with the tingles of first love. As food grows scarce, diseases increase, and the Nazis become determined to find and kill them, the Bielski Otriad struggles to survive, battling back when necessary, including taking up arms. DEFIANCE is a powerful thriller filled with tense human emotion, a gripping story about brotherly love and the basic human instinct to survive against all odds. Craig (LAYER CAKE, CASINO ROYALE), Schreiber (EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED), and Bell (BILLY ELLIOTT) are terrific as the Bielski brothers, three very different individuals who simply refuse to just lie down and die.

House Building cont

After finally getting title settlment Dave can now proceed with building the house. Today the digger came to dig out the footings and Dave laid the pegs. Its really amazing to watch as the shape of the house is being dug out. Unlike Dave I don't have vision but I can see how big the house will be and how much space outside the children will have to play.
The Footing

Kate enjoyed the digger more than Nicholas she really wanted a ride in the digger a tom boy in the making I think???

End of an Era

Its official Kate has not asked for "top up" for 5 days. It saddens me immensely because its an end of era I will never breast feed again. I loved breast feeding it is a bond between mother and child that is so special and hard to describe. As my eyes well up I ponder over all my children all 4 I breast feed all wonderful and special moments. Kate was the longest and the thought of never doing it again is gut wrenching. I could have been naughty and just continued to remind Kate that its top up time but I knew sooner or later it would come to an end.
My baby girl is growing up so fast, soon she'll be 2 whilst my eldest girl will turn 20 time sure does fly!!!!!

3D Muskateers

Meet the three 3D muskateers. Since moving to Mosgiel Nicholas has spent heaps of time playing with his two best buddies. Everyday he always asks if he can go and play with the boys or if they can come and play at our house. Today the Mendy family came for dinner and after dinner whilst the adults talked the boys watched a 3D movie. They looked so cute sitting quietly on the couch I had to get the camera out.
I love living in Mosgiel being close to my friends. I especially love that Nicholas and Kate have their friends to play with everyday if need be. I look forward to watching these boys grow up together as best buddies to see what they become when they are grown young men.

Batboy

HAPPY BATBOY
Everytime we go to Amiee's house Nicholas always runs upstairs to find the Spiderman costume and will wear it until its time to go home. Even at home he finds something to tie around his neck to create a cape ie my tea towels or bath towels or blankets. He then proceeds to dash about the house with his light saber and is our super hero.
Over the school holidays Dave and I have had to work and Nicholas has spent his holidays at a holiday school programme which has been great. However I have felt a little bit bad not spent much time with him. Whilst I was in the Warehouse I saw this batman costume and couldn't resist buying it for him.
I went to pick him up from the holiday programme and whilst driving home we talked about his day. I asked him what he was going to do when he got home and of course his reply was be a superhero. We arrived home and I asked Nicholas if he would help me carry some stuff inside from the car. I reached into the bag and pulled out the costume and gave it to Nicholas and he continued inside not noticing what he had in his hand. All of a sudden I hear this "oh my gosh" mum look, his face said it all.
He lays his costume on the floor beside his bed everynight. When I asked him to put it on his dresser, he insists it needs to be close so he can change quickly if he needs to fight baddies. CUTE!!!

Welcome to the Whanau

Fred and Gwen and the Pirate
I love goldfish and for many years I have had fish outside in a pond. Since moving Fred the fish (the only one who survived out of 5) has been sitting on our bench in a bowl waiting for me to clean the outside pond and put him back in it. Kate and Nicholas really like watching Fred this made me consider moving Fred inside. Nicholas also felt Fred needed a buddy to keep him company. So on Saturday we went to the local garden centre in search of a inside tank and perhaps a new fish.
They had lots of big goldfish and I couldn't resist I had to have one. Nicholas chose the longest one and I really thought Fred was big but he's a baby compared to our new fish who we have named Gwen. Lucky for us they had a inside tank on display which came with everything you need to setup and it was dumb proof so even I could set it up for $100 a bargin I thought and I really liked the pirate ornament.
Consequently we have an inside tank with two fish and the kids love it and I must admit I really like having them inside too so I can ponder over them and think calmly.

Let the Building Commence

Nicholas at the Section
Over the next 7 months most of my posts will be on the progress of the new house. On Friday we officially took over the new section which is was rather exciting. We also got all the money for the old house which of course made MM very very happy.
Profiling
Today Dave and Brad started putting up the profiles and the stringe lines. Later that afternoon MM took me on a tour through the house. Unlike MM I don't posess that thing called vision to me it was a bit of land with lots of string running up and down the section. It will all become more clearer for me when the wall frames go up. So keep reading and watch out for the next post.

Party Princess

Party Princess
Today we were invited to our friends daughter 3rd birthday party. Kate seemed very excited being her first party she could understand. As usual I was running behing schedule when Nicholas comes running in with the mail he was very excited. I couldn't imagine why someone would be excited about bills but alas it wasn't it was a parcel. It was addressed to Kate08 what could it be? It was sent from Grandma thats always a treat. A surprise it was!!! A very pretty pink dress for Kate08. Kates face lit up with a big smile and the next thing she was pulling off her tee shirt whilst saying take off take off. Perfect timing Grandma especially we were off to a party.
Who will blow up my balloon?
The party was great, especially the location which was a local kindergarten. Perfect for little people. There were lots of treats and a beautiful chocolate bumble bee cake (yummy too) not to mention great friends. Kate and Nicholas had great time.

To Procrastinate or Not?

So we have been out of our old house since Dec 23 2009 and the handover for money/house is 15th Jan 2010. I figured that would give me plenty of time to go back and finish cleaning the old house completely. However!!!!!! one has procrastinated and now its the 13th Jan and I haven't been back to the old house alas I have to pull my finger out and get there.
Our lovely neighbours had been over to weed the garden bless them really but it meant I needed to find away to get rid of all those weeds time wasn't on my side. Thank goodness for Mr Green who whipped up today and gave the section a once over and took away all the weeds.
I think the reason for my procrastinating is the dreaded oven cleaning I really HATE cleaning ovens its the worst job ever. Every time I move house I always say to myself I must clean the oven at least once a month but I never do and so the consequence is an oven nightmare. This oven was no exception either gross.
The lovely neighbour had also been around the section and found things we had left or should I say Dave left (on purpose) I think hence that loaded my car up to the top.
Kate was awesome wee helper but mostly she sat on a stool and watched Hi 5 on the lap top.
Finally the kitchen is mopped and everything was clean and looking good. Hopefully the new owners will be well pleased with my efforts.
Its funny generally when I leave a house for the last time I always have a sense of sadness but not this time I felt really happy GOODBYE 16 Galloway Street thanks for the memories.

Movie Review

I really liked this movie it was very moving and had an important message about friendship. I like Jamie Foxx and Robert is one of my fav actors. I only heard one swear word and I watched it twice. The awesome thing about this movie is that Dave was turning his nose up at it before he had even watched it but had to eat his words at the end Don't judge a book by its cover Davey Gravey.
Nicholas and I watched this together and we laughed and laughed. Ben Stiller is awesome. Nicholas loved it and we are going to watch it again cause we have it hired for a week.

4WD

So today we took a drive up to Kororanga, to the Amende's camping site. I have to say it was very very windy drive I was a little nervous we would be blown off the road. It was even more dicey passing a truck and trailer. However we made it to the camp site which is off the road across a dirt/rocky track. The following conversation began between Nicholas and I:
Nicholas: "Wow this is bumpy mum"
Me: "Sure is"
Nicholas: "The Amende car is going fast aye"
Me: "sure are"
Nicholas: "cmon mum keep up"
Me: "No Nicholas our car isn't 4WD"
Nicholas: "WHAT"
We stopped the car and we get out at the camp site. Nicholas is walking around the car and then he looks at me and says "mum we have four wheels!!!!!!" So cute!!

Happy New Year

2010 is here and the Finnie Family have an exciting year ahead of them. Dave starts building on the 15th January, Nicholas will start his new school in February whilst Kate starts her new daycare on the 11th January. I'm hoping to get a new job in Mosgiel maybe as a practice nurse or resthome nurse this will save on travelling/petrol.
Today we left my brothers and headed back to Dunedin. Dave rode his bike from Ashburton to Timaru approx 80km and I followed later to meet him. It was a beautiful day and Timaru had a carnival on with cool rides and a great big paddling pool. We had lunch there and met up with the Facer family which was awesome. Nicholas and Dave had a ride on the sizzler and then it was time to head home.
We arrived back in Dunedin at 5ish and picked up Stacey as she was going to babysit for us. We had been invited to the Jenkins for a Murder Mystery Dinner Evening. What to expect was really exciting my character was Penny Sylan I was the murdered victims nurse (very appropriate) whilst Dave was the murdered victims chauffer. It was like cluedo but you actually get dressed up in character. We arrived at the Jenkins and found Esky parents were there too EXCELLENT should be a fun night. Yep it was funny and we had great fun unfortunately I didn't win but Dave inspector cluedo was the winner of the night guessing it was Chew Chow. What a great game hope to have more fun evenings this year with our friends.
